              a&t state university students who will study journalism this summer at northwestern university are left to right michael thompson rosalind postell and gina davis students attend workshop students to the school he received his ph.d masters and undergraduate degree all from the university of south carolina passed all four parts of the grueling cpa exam in one try and worked as an ac countant for three years with arthur anderson a fortune 500 corporation he has a painstaking task ahead of him but the assertive boyd is eager to take it on and has been looking forward to an opportunity like this for a while now it's mainly a top aspira tion in business to become dean of a business school he said there are only a few positions like this available and he added i wouldn't leave a&t if it weren't for a while joseph boyd was in private practice as a certified public accountant in charlotte a couple of years ago he also worked part time as an in structor at johnson c smith university and that's when he decided that he wanted to make teaching a full time career after teaching at the university of illinois for a while he paid a visit to a&t's business school and was im pressed boyd joined a&t's business faculty as chairman of accounting in 1978 but to many of his student's disa pointment the scholarly boyd has decided to move on to take on the deanship at norfolk state university's business rosalind postell is a native of orlando fla and a daughter of mr and mrs willie postell 5247 letha st a senior speech major she is a reporter for the register a staff member of wnaa a student resident assistant and a member of the student senate and the student cluster gina davis the daughter of everard davis and mrs nathalie davis is a native of pembroke bermuda she is associate news editor of the register a staff member of wnaa the campus radio sta tion a member of the organiza tion of mass communications students a participant ; in the honors program and a senior speech major 2504 fairmont road in lumberton ohio state university and the university of kansas the program directed by patricia camp thompson of the medill school of journalism at northwestern will also in clude field trips lectures and seminars designed to brighten the young journalists horizons following the completion of the workshop at northwestern the a&t students will spend two weeks of observation at the greensboro daily news he is the son of mr and mrs willie w thompson of thompson a native of lumberton is a senior speech major managing editor of the a&t register the campus newspaper vice president of the organization of mass com munications students and a member of the speech choir visiting lecturers in the pro gram are expected from the university of missouri the the students are among 18 students from historically black colleges who will be trained by professional journalists in news writing editing journalism law and ethics and design and layout the workshop will be june 27-aug 5 selected for the six-week pro gram are michael thompson gina e davis and rosalind postell three a&t mass com munications students were selected to participate in a special academy for future journalists summer program at the frank e gannett urban journalism center at north western university at evanston 111 he said the two current engineering buildings graham built in 1939 and cherry 1955 will be converted primarily to undergraduate level the school now offers a bachelor's degree in architectural engineering and both bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical industrial and mechanical engineering said william craft associate dean of the school of engineering recently the legislative leaders have given a tentative a&t state university's highly touted engineering school has been growing like gangbusters in recent years adding programs and students in the face of declining enrollment but classrooms are crowded and the entire department of industrial engineering has been exiled to the basement of a non engineering building nod to a 8.4 million engineering building for a&t i'm absolutely delighted said chancellor edward b fort it's a breakthrough not only for the university but for the state since the new building will make room for microelectronics research and thus contribute to industrial recruitment he said the planned six-story 102,000 square foot engineering building will permit a&t to add two more engineering specialties-civil and chemical at the i can't look back he said you must make a deci sion and act from there leaving the students is the most difficult especially the ones that i recruited you feel an obligation to them but i'm not worried because they'll be left in good hands a&t's business school's faculty include five ph.d.'s seven cpa's out of eleven the most for any other black school in the nation norfolk state university located in norfolk virginia has a student population of 7800 students seventeen hun dred are enrolled in the business school the universi ty is the the third largest predominately black school in the nation but boyd says he's ready and although he hates to leave a&t and his students he says he must move on he never fails to mention the fact that if not for craigs grooming taking on a dean ship would be an almost im possible task position like this one shirt sleeved and seated behind an uncluttered desk boyd mentioned that he has another reason for taking on the deanship at norfolk state more black schools need good business and accounting programs he asserted there is always a demand for accountants because it's a specialty and it takes aptitude he added that there is a definite need for more black accountants when boyd applied for the positon as dean the selection board had many appplicants to select from but the a&t chair had quite a resume aside from his other ac complishments boyd inten sified a&t's business school's recruiting efforts and helped attract some 20 scholarship boyd said that it will take five years for a prescribed cir riculum to take effect and br ing national accreditation to norfolk state this year's graduating class consisted of only 20 accoun tants but next year's boyd said will include 40 boyd hasn't outlined any specific goals for norfolk state's business school yet but he does have a long-range goal that will lead the school into national accreditation the first thing i plan to do is observe he said i'll observe and find out the strengths and weaknesses then i'll plot a course of ac tion to get the school ac credited school norfolk state is lacking in its leadership potential boyd said it's in the same situa tion this business scb ol was in before dean craig came here twelve years ago quiester craig dean of the business school led the once floundering school into na tional accreditation in 1978 recruiters from all over the united states are making of fers to graduates faster than craig and boyd can produce
