number one is their planned desti nation and dr johnny hodge director of the band for 19 years has imple mented a plan to take them there it is more than a great feeling knowing that with all of the hard work we've put into our performances that we can get recognized said bluford thompson a&t's head drum major it lets everyone know that we are one of the elite yet we have goals to strive for because we are not at the top ognized street and smith magazine's black college issue recently ranked the aggie marching machine as no 7 among the hbcu bands when you do the numbers seven out of more than 150 hbcu's is an achievement to be reckoned with it is an honor to be reg think about the game itself the half time performance and the bands bat tling throughout imagine having a car without an engine or a house without walls or a barbershop without the barbers some things simply go together and a historically black college or university football game without the band is like having a girlfriend without the girl the two go hand in hand by edward moore it's a saturday afternoon the crowd goes wild there's a mighty roar as the aggie marching band takes the field the stage is an aggie football game at halftime performing is the world famous aggie marching band entertainment is the name of the game while perfection is the goal register staff vttiter sets its eyes on the prize ranked first a&t's marching band register advertising manager by sharon roseborough n.c a&t's homecoming is an event that is much anticipated by the alumni students faculty and staff friends family and members of this community hotels restaurants and many businesses in the area also anticipate the homecoming weekend of october 22-24 like many other events that pass through greensboro homecoming brings an impressive amount of revenue into the city according to henry fourrier president of the greensboro area convention and visitors bureau this homecoming event is expected to bring in f 9.4 million aggies from all over the united states will be coming into the city for the homecoming festivities because of the influx of visitors hotels and motel in the surrounding areas are extremely busy the greensboro inn located within three blocks of a&t's campus is one hotel expecting a large increase in business we always have about a 25 percent increase in business during the week of homecoming although we are a small hotel we do attract a lot of visitors during the homecoming weekend because of our location stated dorothy livengood an employee at the greensboro inn according to charmagne asante a recep tionist at the comfort inn located on high point road business at the comfort inn is always good during a&t's homecoming we are already booked solid for the weekend of october 22 we always do 30 cedric terry first-year drum major and sophomore osha major is excit ed about his appointment to drum the bands in front of us have 200 plus and have a wider range of instru ments she said first female drum major kellye worth a senior biology major said an increase in the band's size would help move a&t up in rank hodge we were the only one besides famu that made it from the meac which is a tribute to our program said a&t should have been no 3 or 4 said hodge as for the others he said famu should have been no 1 prairie view should have been rated higher and bands like howard norfolk alcorn and hampton should not have been left off the list although enthused and excited about the 1999 band dr hodge said the no 7 ranking was a bit off one else it is the sort of thing we in bands see as non-returnable when bat tling - when you play a song and the other band can't answer see band on page 6 bottom drum majors cedric bluford and kelley top the aggie marching band breaks it down at half time of the hampton game despite rumors homecoming step show on go see homecoming on page 7 not poetry page 11 homecoming calendar 7 aggie sports 8 and 9 entertainment reviews 10 money hill saw it somewhat differendy we had two initial meetings in which the sga took a non-negotiat ing stance hill said as sga pres by edward moore register staff witer the rumors grew out of meetings between the student government association sga the national pan hellenic council nphc and the band fraternity and sorority as they rumors have abounded that there would be no step show this homecoming but the madness has stopped the show apparently must go on tional debates it took four meetings said bailey the underlying disagreement she said was about principles attempted to iron out differences regarding the 1999 homecoming show the 1999 homecoming step show will go on as scheduled at 8 p.m friday oct 22 it will go on after hours of negotiating and emo kendra hill sga president and nphc president imani bailey of delta sigma theta sorority con firmed that the step show was in jeopardy -
